The Lighting Association Technical Committee

This powerful Committee hails representatives from all sectors of the industry, for example Philips, Dar, Ansell Electrical and MK, meeting 5 times a year to discuss/influence the technical & legislative issues facing the Industry. Assessing draft proposals emanating from the European Commission, UK Government and other sources such as standards bodies, etc. Information is circulated to members in the form of Technical Bulletins and Information sheets.

Working closely with DEFRA, BIS, OFGEM, EST and The Carbon Trust. We share our experience and technical understanding in National, European and International arenas, ensuring that the voice of our members is heard.

The LA was a founder member of CELMA, the main body that works with the European commission on the EU legislation for lighting

Membership of the Association's Technical Committee is, by design, representative of the many sector interests of the Association's membership, comprising representation from the lamp industry, LED, commercial and decorative luminaire industries and components suppliers with representation also from the retail sector, UK government and the Association's Laboratories

Lawrence Barling - LATC Secretary

I have been in the lighting industry for 30+ years, initially with Thorn Lighting then GE Lighting and now the Lighting Association since 2007. My experience is in lamp design, quality systems and for the last 15 years in standardisation and regulatory requirements.
As Senior Technical Manager for the Lighting Association my main role is representing LA members on the various UK, EU and International committees related to the lighting industry. These can be directly related to the lamps, control gear or luminaires but also cover areas such as UK building regulations, wiring regulations etc. I also cover the day to day technical queries, LA Technical Bulletins and Information Sheets, technical training/seminars and presentations at various events.
I represent the LA at CELMA, our EU trade association, on various working groups including domestic lighting, ecodesign and LED and also on the Technical Committee.
In support of my LA activities I am Chairman of BSI committees CPL/34 covering lighting, CPL/34/1 lamps and CPL/34/2 lampholders and at international level I am Chairman of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) committee SC34A for lamps and its working group PRESCO. In addition I am a member of over 40 committees on lighting and related areas.
If you have a technical query or problem I look forward to your call.
