The Student Lighting Designer for 2009 is....
This competition allows students to gain valuable knowledge about the lighting industry, whilst using their creative skills to develop new lighting products. Sponsored by a number of big industry names: Energy Saving Trust, Spearmark International Dar Lighting Ltd, Total Lighting Magazine, Philips, OSRAM, ACID and The Lighting Association.

16 finalists were chosen from over 500 entries. Working prototypes were presented to a panel of esteemed Judges.

The awards were presented by Dids Macdonald from ACID (anti copying in design) Ltd

The Student Lighting Designer of the Year
Beth Jackson, Edinburgh College of Art with a ceiling light titled Air. Beth was presented with a cheque for £2,000.

Second place
Chris Natt, Brunel University with a table light titled Stimuli Light 3.0. Chris was presented with a cheque for £1,000.

Third place
Fergus Taylor from Buckinghamshire New University, with a table light titled Poised. Fergus was presented with a cheque for £500.


 
NEW Children’s Lighting Award
Spearmark Lighting and the Lighting Association are this year for the first time awarding the Children’s Lighting Award worth £1000

The Children's Lighting Designer of the Year
Faye Whitear, Coventry University with a table light titled Nuno.
The Philips Lighting Award
Catherine Gibbins, Nottingham Trent University with a table light titled tom dick and harry and Chris Natt, Brunel University with a table light titled Stimuli Light 3.0.

The winning Student Designers, second, third place and Philips award, also received free memberships and agreements, consisting of free memberships for a year together with a safe pitch kit (3 agreements - confidentiality, IP and licence royalty agreement). These were kindly sponsored by ACID (Anti Copyright In Design).

Christina Valentine from Ravensbourne College of Design, with a wall light titled ‘Form’.

Second place
Oscar Akira Tange, Nottingham Trent University with a floor light titled ‘Frame’. Prize money £750.

Justyna Wrembel from Design Institute of Koszalin Polytechnic, Poland with a floor light titled ‘flying grass 42’.

2006 Class Acts
The Student Lighting Designer of the Year
Tom Abbott, University of Hertfordshire with a ceiling light titled Bambooo.

Second place
Charlotte Tangye, Manchester Metropolitan University with a ceiling light titled Globe Light.

Third place
Christina Valentine from Ravensbourne College of Design, with a table light titled Create A Lamp.

Energy Efficient Student Lighting Designer of the Year, sponsored by the Energy Saving Trust.
The 2006 winner is Przemyslaw Jan Majchrzak, Koszalin Polytechnic – Poland, with a floor light titled The Leaf of Grass.

The Philips Lighting Award
This year it went to, Christopher Rea from Nottingham Trent University with the ceiling light called ARRAY and Yuichi Ishihara from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, with the table light called Flying Lamp.

Highly Commended Certificates were awarded to:
Kirsty Archer, University of Wolverhampton with the ceiling light Efflorescence.
John Caswell, University of Plymouth with the table light titled Slim Jim
and, Dawn Wootton, University of Central England with the outdoor light Footlight.

2005 - Bringing Light to Life.
The Student Lighting Designer of the Year went to Paul Cross from Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College. He presented a table light titled Tri-Verse.

Second place went to Ben Argent from Nottingham Trent University. Presenting a table lamp titled Babooba.

Third place went to Chloe Smith from Nottingham Trent University, with Ionassi. And also was a recipient of The Philips Award.

The Energy Efficient Student Lighting Designer of the year, sponsored by the Energy Saving Trust, went to Simon Pattison from University of Central England. He presented a floor light titled Bamboo

The Philips Lighting Award awarded to Chloe Smith from Nottingham Trent University and Gian Pascal from Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College. Gian presented a ceiling light called Kosmos.

Highly Commended Certificates to: Demitrios Kargotis from Coventry University with the floor light titled Light Sandwich.
Milo Bannell from Nottingham Trent University with the ceiling light titled Skewer and, Zsuzsanna Nagy from the University of East London with Star Shaped Ceiling Lampshade.

2004 - A Generation to Light the Way.

The Student Lighting Designer of the Year went to Benjamin Perry from Manchester Metropolitan University. He presented a wall light titled ‘Light in a box with moths.

Second place went to Paul Foster from University of Wales Institute, School of Product Design and Engineering. Presenting a table lamp titled ‘LED Fin’.

Third place went to Patrick Jake Banks from Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College. He presented a ceiling light titled ‘Ceiling Rose dinner light’.

The Energy Efficient Student Lighting Designer of the year went to Nikhil Patel from University of Central England. He presented a wall light titled ‘The Deco Light’..

The Philips Lighting Award, awarded to Rebecca Feather from Wolverhampton University, presented a ceiling light titled ‘Glow Worm’.

Jonathan Rossinotti from Sheffield Hallam University. He presented a table lamp titled ‘Belhegor Light’.
