Energy Efficient Lighting

From September 2009 the phase out of incandescent and less energy efficient bulbs will begin, we will all be looking to energy efficient bulbs to meet our lighting needs.

Lighting typically accounts for up to 30% of total electricity costs within the home, and by installing energy efficient lighting or lamps you can reduce your overall energy costs.

Some Facts
  • By buying an energy efficient light bulb rather than the other alternatives, you can cut energy wastage by over three quarters. That is a saving of £3 a year for an average bulb, or up to £6 for brighter bulbs, or those used for more hours a day.
  • If everyone in the UK switched all their remaining traditional inefficient light bulbs to energy saving light bulbs, the electricity saved in just one year would run the UK¿s street lighting for over 5 years or provide electricity for every house in London for 11 months.
  • Replacing all the remaining traditional inefficient light bulbs in your house could save you around £50 and 170kg CO2 a year, or £675 and 3 tonnes of CO2 over the lifetime of the bulbs.

Find the Right Energy Saving Bulb for you!
Like others, you may have got confused trying to find a comparison bulb and when you did find one, you felt the light output wasn't what you expected.

Download the chart below, this will show you what type and wattage of bulbs are available based on how much light they give out. This is called LUMENS.

Lumen information can be found on the bulb’s box and will become a prominent measurement for future bulbs.

The G2Action website www.g2action.org/ has been developed with the support of the heating, insulation, glazing and lighting industries to provide information on how to improve the Energy Efficiency of Homes and improving the EPC ratings from “G” towards “A”.

There is a great deal of confusing and sometimes conflicting information about what should be done and what is the best thing to do? What will save the most money? And what is the pay-back?

The fact is that all homes will need to be fully insulated, have the most efficient heating and hot water systems and controls, have efficient windows and low energy lighting. It is not about why or how it is about when and that is now!
