Inspector Training Goes Global

In today's economic environment, the need to source high volumes of lighting products from overseas suppliers has been a growing trend for many years. It has been increasingly seen as a necessity, to support this geographical shift in production, with additional controls to assure quality.

LA Members highlighted a need for The Section 7 Inspector Training Seminar, to enable them to meet this changing economic environment.

The Code of Practice (CoP) has been a cornerstone of the organisation since its introduction in the early 80's. Over sixty quality control and technical personnel have attended the Section 7 Inspector Training Seminars, held at the LA's Headquarters in Telford Members felt that their overseas personnel responsible for supplier visits and pre-shipment inspections should also be able to benefit from this training.

So, on 1st November 2004, Garry Jackson, the LA's Technical Manager departed for the Far East to present our first overseas Section 7 Inspector Training Seminars, breaking new ground for the Association and the industry.

The programme covered:

  • A review of applicable UK and EU Legislation.
  • An introduction to the BS EN 60598 standard.
  • Detailed explanation of the CoP requirements
  • Factory inspection techniques.
  • Concluding in a written examination.

A practical workshop session addressed:
The use and operation of industry standard test equipment, covering various classifications of luminaire design.
A review of luminaires with simulated faults, representing a concentration of mechanical, electrical and marking non-conformities.
This assessed the delegate's general product knowledge and understanding of the BS EN 60598 standard.

In China, Premier Decorations held a seminar at their Offices.

Why hold the Seminars?

  • To provide assurances of quality, when high volume product lines  where being supplied from original equipment Manufacturers (OEM).
  • Once approved batch testing is acceptable in the UK.
  • Technical personnel achieve Inspector Certification (Certificate issued for 2 years) this allows them to perform annual factory audits.
  • Cost effective measure of achieving accreditation.
  •

"As with many initiatives and services provided by the Association, we have again responded to requests from our members and provided what they have considered as a valuable and high quality training initiative".
Garry Jackson

Our Members are serious about achieving Code of Practice Accreditation and investing in their personnel who are responsible for making important quality decisions vital to their business. This Seminar was a proactive investment in personnel and resources, demonstrating their commitment to improving quality.

Peter Hunt (LA CEO) Presenting Certificate to Care Dai (NLC)                       Garry Jackson (LA Technical Manager) with Care

During recent visit to China LA CEO Peter Hunt attended a Training Seminar presented by LA Technical Manager Garry Jackson and Associate Henry Chen.  Peter was delighted to be able to present the first LA Merit Award to Care Dai   NLC Factory Audit Manager.
Care had no idea this was to happen and was 'flabbergasted' but bursting with pride. 'Well-done Care'. (Garry Jackson)

CoP Accreditation not only specifies requirements for the achievement and maintenance of product quality but also enables a substantiation of participants' claims of conformity with European Law.
