Below are answers to some of the frequently asked qustions we get here at the Association.
What is an energy efficient lamp?
All electric lamps use energy but some are more efficient than others i.e. they provide an equivalent amount light whilst using less energy A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) is commonly known as an energy efficient light bulb due to, for instance, an 11W CFL being able to provide a similar amount of light as a 60W incandescent lamp. They are usually more expensive but can last up to 10 times longer making them far more efficient than the more familiar incandescent light bulbs. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are extremely efficient and can generate more light per unit of electricity than most technologies. They don’t need mercury to generate light and can last up to 50 times longer than a conventional incandescent lamp and around 5 times longer than a CFL light bulb.
What does the CE mark mean?
It is the manufacturer's statement that the product is in compliance with all applicable legislation.
Must I stop selling banned bulbs on the specified date?
No, bulbs that are already in stock in the EU can continue to be sold.
What does “placing on the market” mean?
The EUP Regulation relates to the placing of bulbs on the market. In general, this means the first time they are placed on the EU market. This could be the initial import into the EU or an EU manufacturer placing them in a warehouse where they are available for sale. Bulbs already placed on the market can continue to be sold after the deadline.
